The Bells of January

Ahh, the annual arrival of Honeybells from our landlord in Florida. Technically a Tangelo, this particular variety is a cross between a Dancy Tangerine and Duncan Grapefruit. It is sweet as can be, and juicy as heck. But, the best part is that I dry the peels for a variety of culinary uses - especially Tangerine Beef!

Scotty,
I've always been curious about the quality of the mail-order fruit out of Florida. Over the past few years I have given it as a gift to family members I don't often see. Since I don't see them often, I never get any feedback. I've always assumed it's amazing and hence have given it as a gift.

Is is that amazing? Might have to order for myself some time!

Redman, I will only respond from my own experiences. Combo baskets very bad. Hard and unripe. The honeybells have almost always been perfect, but I have always wondered what would have happened if my wife or I hadn't been here for delivery. A couple of days in sub-freezing temps would be unfortunate.

I will say that this year it was a different purveyor, and for the first time there was a rotten one.

e-mail if you want details, but yeah, if you like playing with citrus, they are that good. For me ,as someone on statins, it's also the closest to grapefruit I can get!
